Can I show a movie on campus?

I wish to show a movie at an event for my club, class, or campus-wide, can I?

Answer

If you wish to show a film that does not have Public Performance Rights attached, the answer is yes! However, you cannot charge admission for this event.

If you wish to show a film that does not have Public Performance Rights attached, you will need to inquire with a licensing company about purchasing the rights for that showing. Swank Digital Media is typically who you would go through. They have different tiers of licenses for in-classroom and event showings. You can find more information about their licenses here on their website. The library does not have a standing subscription to Swank or its licensing, which is why we strongly encourage people to locate films within our current streaming digital media collections, Kanopy or Films on Demand. You can find more on searching for PPR content in those two collections on the Digital Media & eBooks LibGuide.

Ultimately, this is a copyright issue and we need to make sure that all rights are properly met or the owner of the film rights could sue.
